WIMA in partnership with PWR Advisory recently released the Top 28 Gender Diversity Scorecard Edition 1 which measures the level of female representation on the boards of the top 28 companies by market capitalization on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange. The report shows that only 21.6% (49 out 227 ) of board directorships on the companies listed on the DSE are held by women of board directorships of the DSE’s. In the WIMA Top 28 report, 40% of the companies in the Commercial Services sector have at least a 30% female board representation. This was the highest across all sectors followed by the Banks, Finance, and Investment sector where 30.7% of the companies have at least a 30% female board representation. It was shocking to learn that the only company with a female CEO is in the Banks, Finance, and Investment sector and none of the 28 listed companies has a female board chair. Yet studies by Mckinsey, Catalyst Inc, and others have found that financial performance for firms improves with more gender-balanced corporate boards. Mckinsey in particular found that African companies with at least 25% female representation on their boards, had a 20% higher than industry average earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) margin. We have a lot of work to do and let us change this!
